Four instruments collect dietary data.
DHQ II
The Diet History Questionnaire (DHQ II) is an online food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) that asks about a list of foods
eaten in the past 12 months. The frequency and quantity of these foods were recorded.
The food frequency files contain one record per food, with the two administrations split into different datasets.
The nutrient file contains one record per person with an array of the two administrations. The raw questionnaire contains one record per person per administration with their responses to the questionnaire.
You may view data dictionaries and formats for the DHQ files. Datasets can be obtained by submitting a request.

ASA24
The ASA24 is an online self-administered 24-hour recall of dietary data.
It asks respondents to report the intake of all foods, beverages and supplements over the past 24 hours from midnight to midnight.
The version used in IDATA was ASA24-2011.
Foods, supplements, nutrients and MyPyramid equivalents data was compiled using the USDA Food and Nutrient Database for
Dietary Studies (FNDDS) (version 4.1), the USDA MyPyramid Equivalents Database (MPED) (version 2.0), and the NHANES
Dietary Supplement Database (DSD) (2007-08). More information on ASA24 can be found at: https://epi.grants.cancer.gov/asa24/
Participants were asked to complete six ASA24 recalls, two months apart.
Each participant was allowed three attempts, assigned on different days, to complete each assigned ASA24 recall.
A few participants provided more than one complete ASA24 recall.
The ASA24 files are provided two ways: one set of files includes all attempts
(including incomplete attempts and extra complete attempts after the participant had already completed a recall for that administration)
and another set has been created that includes only the 1st completed attempt in each of the 6 administrations.
The latter set of data files, those containing only the 1st completed attempts) is recommended for analysis.

7-Day Food Checklist
The 7-Day Food Checklist is a booklet of 7 identical paper questionnaires each to be completed daily over 7 consecutive days.
The questionnaires ask respondents to check a box each time they eat one of the foods listed. The dataset provides the counts
of each food for each day.
Participants were asked to complete two 7-Day Food Checklists, one year apart.
The 7-Day Food Checklist data is in two files, one per person and one per day.
After several rounds of cognitive testing, NCI has developed a machine scannable seven-day
checklist instrument (PDF, 235 KB) to be coupled with NCI's FFQ, the Diet History Questionnaire II.
The instrument has been administered in Re-OPEN, a new study in which OPEN participants have been contacted
again and asked to complete additional dietary assessment instruments.
Whether its use in conjunction with the DHQ II improves accuracy of self-reported dietary information is being analyzed.
You may view data dictionaries and formats for the 7-Day Food Checklist files. Datasets can be obtained by submitting a request.

4-Day Food Record
The 4-Day Food Record (4DFR) was a self-administered 4-day journal of dietary data. The data was collected as free response and was converted into food counts, and these datasets do not contain the free response answers. Foods, supplements, nutrients, and food patterns equivalents data was compiled using the USDA Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) and the USDA Food Patterns Equivalents Database (FPED).
The 4DFR files are provided two ways: one set of files includes the 2 administration attempts. The extra files contain extra administrations data for the 9 people who completed 3 administrations. The first set of data files, those not containing the extra administrations, are recommended for analysis.
