Title
The associations between nutrient intakes and prostate cancer risk in American males
Summary
Objective: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer worldwide for males and the second leading cause of cancer death in American men. Previous studies showed that genetic variants accounted for 40% of the etiologic factors in PCa, approximately. However, the contributions of social-economic factors, lifestyles, diets and nutrition intakes have not been quantified yet. The general objective of this proposal is to reveal and model the potential associations between nutrient intakes and prostate cancer risk in American males. The results will be helpful for PCa prediction, prevention and management. Study design: we will perform an integrative analysis of the public datasets using statistical and machine learning methods. Hereby, we request the datasets generated by the PLCO, including Baseline Questionnaire (BQ), Dietary Questionnaire (DQX), Diet History Questionnaire (DHQ), Supplemental Questionnaire (SQX) and Medication Use Questionnaire (MUQ). In particular, individual’s intakes of macronutrients and micronutrients during the following-up period, which are critical for completing our specific aims, will be estimated from the DHQ data, in conjunction with external datasets. The research report(s) based on the findings of the proposed analysis will be submitted to peer-review journals for publication.
Aims

(1) Reveal the potential associations between nutrient intakes and PCa risk.
(2) Reveal the potential associations between nutrient intakes and blood prostate specific agent (PSA) levels.
(3) Develop a prediction model for PCa occurrence, in which the predictive features include genetic, social-economic and dietary (or nutrition) factors.
