Title
Association of Coffee Drinking with All Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality
Summary
Coffee is a global commodity, and the United States is the top consumer. According to an industry report, more than 4 out of every 5 U.S. adults drink coffee, and the majority of U.S. adults drink coffee daily. Despite considerable evidence supporting inverse associations between coffee drinking with total and casuse-specific mortality, the relatively modest associations continue to be debated. The recently published article by Liu et al. suggests that adults under the age of 55 years who consume coffee may be at increased risk of death; however, this finding is yet to be observed in other cohorts. The PLCO cohort enrolled individuals under the age of 55, which will enable us to examine whether the relationship between coffee drinking and mortality is modified by age.
Aims

Our primary aim is to contribute a high quality analysis using prospectively collected data to the mixed body of literature in order to better understand the true nature of the associations of coffee consumption with total and cause specific mortality. In addition, we will explore potential effect modification of the coffee, mortality relationship by age.
