Title
Pooled analysis of viral exposure history and development of liver cancer
Summary
In a prior PLCO project (EEMS-2021-00150), our group examined the relationship between viral exposure history and development of liver cancer. Our project was based on the use of Virscan technology to comprehensively determine viral exposure history. The PLCO population is largely negative for hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus. Our colleague, Dr. Mei-Hsuan Lee,PI of the REVEAL study, conducted a very similar analysis in her population in Taiwan. Dr. Lee's population has individuals who are positive for viral infections and who are negative for viral infections. At this time, we would like to combine the datasets from the two populations to determine whether there is a common viral signature related to liver cancer. We will conduct analyses in those who are HBV and/or HCV positive and in those who are not.
Aims
The main aim of the project is to conduct a pooling analysis of the Virscan results from PLCO and REVEAL. Sub Aim 1 is to examine just those persons who are positive for HBV and HCV infections. Sub Aim 2 is to examine those persons who are negative for HBV and HCV infections. Aim 2 will be to examine whether the bacterial, fungal or protozoa species that are identified by Virscan differ between cases and controls. Both Aims 1 and 2 will also examine whether their are significant differences in the results by sex and age. An additional Aim will be to determine the correlation between HBV and HCV status as determined by clinical assays and as determined by Virscan.
