Title
Light And Intermittent Smoking (LITS) and Lung Cancer

Summary
Light and intermittent smokers (LITS) comprises the fastest growing segment of smokers in the Unites States today. While an increasing proportion of smokers use fewer than 5 cigarettes per day- or - do not smoke every day, the health risks to this group of smokers are poorly understood.
We intent to characterize the risk of lung cancer and other smoking related conditions/cancers in this group of smokers. We will intestigate whether there is hetrerogeneity in this group by such factors as age and nicotine dependency.

Aims

We have 3 specific aims. Aim #2 is the focus of our request for PLCO data.

Aim 1- we are characterizing LITS by reviewing national survey data. We will use this information to define LITS for study in PLCO

Aim 2- once we have defined LITS, we will examine this group in relation to lung cancer in PLCO. We will take into account gender, age, COPD, family history and other lung cancer risk factors.

Aim 3- As power may limit the ability to examine these questions in PLCO, as a follow-up, we will extend the study to other cohorts with similar information.
