Title
Blood metabolomics, smoking and lung cancer risk
Summary
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality that accounted for 1.6 million deaths worldwide. Metabolomics is the rapid, high-throughput detection and quantification of small-molecules such as metabolite intermediates, food components and hormones found in an organism. The relationships of these metabolites with lung cancer risk are still largely unknown. Therefore, we propose to identify the associations between metabolite levels and lung cancer risk in the PLCO that measured pre-diagnostic blood metabolite levels. We also propose to assess the association between smoking and blood metabolites.
Aims

Aim 1: To examine the association between pre-diagnostic blood metabolite levels and lung cancer risk in the PLCO.
Aim 2: To identify metabolites that are associated with smoking.
