Title
Male pattern baldness and risk of mortality and cancer outcomes
Summary
Male pattern baldness has been associated with risk of prostate cancer and colorectal cancer, with the most pronounced associations found for frontal-only and frontal plus moderate or severe vertex baldness in some studies. We propose to investigate the association of male pattern baldness with risk of a broader range of health outcomes, including overall mortality, cardiovascular mortality, cancer mortality, other mortality, overall caner incidence, and incidence of major cancers, using data collected in the PLCO. In particular, PLCO participants were asked to recall their hair-loss patterns at age 45 years in the SQX: no baldness, frontal baldness only, frontal plus mild vertex baldness, frontal plus moderate vertex baldness, and frontal plus severe vertex baldness. Among males who completed the BQ and SQX with data on the male baldness question, we have identified 2,139 deaths and 2,822 cases with a cancer diagnosis after they filled out the SQX.
Aims
We propose to investigate the association of male pattern baldness with risk of multiple health outcomes, including overall mortality, cardiovascular mortality, cancer mortality, other mortality, overall caner incidence, and incidence of major cancers, using data collected in the PLCO.
