Title
Cause of death by lung cancer stage
Summary
Overdiagnosis occurs in lung cancer screening. Some of the overdiagnosed cases occur because screen-detected patients die of a non-lung-cancer cause of death prior to their hypothetical symptomatic data of diagnosis. The purpose of this project is to examine causes of death by stage at lung cancer diagnosis. These distributions will be identified to determine whether most screen-detected patients that are diagnosed at a late stage die due to lung cancer.
Aims

Among individuals in NLST diagnosed with lung cancer:
1. Examine cause of death for combinations of study arm, stage, and method of detection. (for deceased participants only)
2. Examine time from date of diagnosis to date of death (or censoring if did not die during the trial) for combinations of study arm, stage, and method of detection. Do this separately for living participants and deceased participants.
3. Redo 1 and 2, adding in histology if numbers permit.
