Title
Ovarian Volume and Hormone Levels
Summary
Among postmenopausal women, elevated circulating levels of androgens are associated with increased risk of cancers of the breast and endometrium. After menopause, the ovaries and adrenals represent the main source of androgens, which in turn serve as substrates for estrogen production. Higher circulating estrogen levels are also risk factors for these cancers. A previous PLCO analysis found that women with larger non-cystic ovaries, as assessed by transvaginal ultrasound (TVU), were at increased risk for breast and endometrial cancer. Analysis of endometrial cancer cases has also shown that larger ovarian volumes, determined using pathology reports, were related to significantly higher serum levels of estrogens. We propose to use existing PLCO data to investigate the relationship between ovarian volumes, assessed by TVU, and serum estrogen and estrogen metabolite levels
Aims

To investigate the relationship between ovarian volumes, assessed by TVU, and serum estrogen and estrogen metabolite levels in postmenopausal women in PLCO
