Title
Imaging Biomarkers and Lung Cancer Development and Mortality

Summary
We plan to investigate the relationship between body composition and the development of lung cancer over time based on LDCT. Our reasoning is that body composition, which reflects an individual's long-term habits and lifestyle (such as physical activity, exercise, and diet), may influence the development and growth of cancer. Our goal is to create a novel computer model that can quantitatively assess an individual's risk of developing lung cancer over time and predict whether a suspicious nodule (if present) is malignant, based on LDCT and patient demographics (such as age, gender, and race). We will use data from the Pittsburgh Lung Screening Study (PLuSS and its extension – PLuSS XX) cohort (n > 4,000) and state-of-the-art time-to-event methods to implement and test this premise. The NLST dataset will be used as an external cohort to further validate the performance of the prediction models.

Aims

SA1: Identify the body composition features associated with the development of lung cancer.
SA2: Develop and validate computer models for predicting the development of lung cancer using LDCT.
