Title
Computed tomographic detection of necrotic lung nodules
Summary
Extensive work has been done developing algorithms that can discriminate benign from malignant nodules but less is known about the ability of advanced CT post-processing techniques to identify regional features of those nodules. One such feature that may have high clinical relevance is tissue necrosis as determined by histopathology. We proposed to obtain the pathology slides of those people enrolled in the CT arm of the NLST and determine which subset of nodules had histologic evidence of tissue necrosis. We will then develop advanced CT post-processing algorithms to identify those nodules with necrosis (yes/no) as well as objectively determine the extent of such findings (continuous). Finally, we will explore the epidemiologic associations and clinical correlates of our CT based nodule necrosis score.
Aims
Specific Aim 1: To develop and test a software algorithm that can detect the presence of nodule necrosis on CT scan.
Specific Aim 2: To develop and test a CT based software algorithm that can objectively determine the extent of necrosis observed on histopathology.
Specific Aim 3: To examine the epidemiologic and clinical correlates of nodule necrosis using cross sectional and longitudinal data available in the National Lung Screening Trial.
