Title
The association between dietary beta-carotene intake and behavioral risk factors and invasive cancer risk
Summary
Antioxidants have anti-inflammatory activities and were found to lower the all-cause mortality in general healthy population in observational studies. However, the associations with incidence and mortality of site-specific cancers were inconsistent. Beta-carotene is widely available in plants, and it helps prevent oxidative damage and balance the free radicals which may cause the development of various types of cancers. In addition, several lifestyle factors like smoking status and alcohol consumption were found to have modification effects on antioxidants intake and total cancer rates. Therefore, we plan to perform a longitudinal study examining the association between dietary beta-carotene intake and invasive cancer risk, and examine whether the association would be modified by lifestyle factors.
Aims

We aim to evaluate the beta-carotene intake from diet and supplements and cancer risk using data from Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) cancer screening trial. The interested exposures include dietary intake of antioxidants, daily energy consumption, cigarette smoking status, alcohol consumption, body mass index, physical activity, medication use, and immune biomarkers (in Lung 2nd).
