Title
Computer aided detection (CAD)--Assisted chest x-ray for lung cancer screening: A PLCO pilot study
Summary
In lung cancer screening, the goal is to diagnose lung cancer early, at Stage I. At this stage, lung cancer can be cured in well over 50% of patients. Unfortunately, without screening, only 20% of patients are at Stage I at diagnosis. The PLCO is evaluating chest x-ray screening for lung cancer. One attempt to improve the effectiveness of chest x-ray in detecting lung cancer is to enhance sensitivity by using CAD. The proposed objective of this study is to assess whether CAD might lead to earlier diagnosis for CXR screened subjects. To accomplish this, we intend to apply CAD retrospectively to screening x-rays from the Minnesota screening center of the PLCO. This is a pilot study designed to lay the ground work for a multi-institutional study, if the pilot results appear promising.
Aims
The hypothesis to be tested is whether CAD-enhanced chest x-ray will produce stepwise improvement in the timely detection of lung cancer by chest x-ray screening. The aim is to evaluate the potential of CXR enhanced by CAD to detect some lung cancers earlier than by CXR alone. To gain practical experience from this reading modality in order to improve the methods to help develop the multi-institutional study.
