Title
Facilitating Cancer Etiology and Early Marker Research by Enabling Access to PLCO Data and Biospecimens
Summary
PLCO has established policies and procedures for investigators to access biospecimens and associated data. The Etiologic and Early Markers Study (EEMS) review process was implemented in 2005 to facilitate research using PLCO questionnaire data, clinical data, and collected blood, buccal cells and tissue. The policies and procedures include a peer-review process, procedures for obtaining biospecimens and data, and publication policies. Web-based systems have been configured to track the proposal review process and post-approval activities including requests for and delivery of specimens, study progress, and resulting publications. Successful coordination of the PLCO ancillary study review processes, including the EEMS study review and specimen tracking processes, have facilitated access to PLCO biospecimens and associated epidemiologic data for a wide variety of investigators. This has added considerably to our knowledge about various cancers.
Aims

The primary aim of this study is to examine how increased access to PLCO biospecimens and data has facilitated (and continues to facilitate) biomedical research. In order to do so, we will evaluate the procedures, policies, and tools used for coordinating PLCO study and specimen tracking and enabling extramural and intramural investigators to use PLCO resources. This would include developing a "PLCO Study Coordination Lessons Learned" manuscript that would describe the development and coordination of the PLCO and EEMS study review, study and biospecimen tracking, and post-approval processes.
