Title
Occurrence and Natural History of Complex Ovarian Cysts in PLCO
Summary
Comparable to the recently completed work describing the incidence, prevalence, and natural history of simple ovarian cysts in PLCO (Greenlee 2008), this work will leverage the large size and regimented TVU screening of the PLCO trial to evaluate and comment on the occurrence, natural history, and relation to ovarian cancer, if any, of complex ovarian cysts among post-menopausal women. Also similar to the simple cyst project, this work will be a natural followup to the work of Hartge and colleagues (2000), which provided a description of the occurrence of simple and complex ovarian cysts at the T0 screening, and found no association of baseline cyst prevalence with recognized ovarian cancer risk factors.
Aims
The specific aims of this project are to describe: 1) the prevalence of complex ovarian cysts at a woman's first screening where the ovaries were visualized; 2) the incidence of complex ovarian cysts at subsequent screenings among women previously free of complex cysts; 3) the progression or regression of identified complex cysts over time; and, 4) the potential association with subsequent ovarian cancer development.
