Title
Body-mass index and mortality among US Latinos
Summary
A high body-mass index (BMI) is associated with increased mortality among white individuals, but the relationship between BMI and mortality among US Latinos has been rarely studied and results are often difficult to interpret due to methodological issues. Therefore, the aim of this project is to explore the association between BMI and all-cause mortality and mortality from broad category of diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer, endocrine disease, respiratory disease and digestive disease among US Latino population. To do so, we propose to conduct survival analyses using the PLCO dataset to estimate hazard ratios for an association between BMI and mortality, adjusting for potential confounding factors, such as demographics, general health, smoking, alcohol consumption and physical activities.
Aims

1. To examine the association between BMI and all-cause mortality among US Latino population
2. To examine the association between BMI and mortality from broad disease categories, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease, endocrine, and digestive disease.
