Title
Standardized Pathologic Assessment of Ovarian Carcinomas in the PLCO Trial
Summary
In the PLCO trial, initial pathologic diagnosis was provided by the clinical sites; re-review has been initiated for ovarian tumors. The goal of the current project is to refine data regarding histopathologic type and grading of ovarian carcinomas in PLCO. The results of this effort will have general applicability with regard to the diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma. Guidelines for sharing the results of the review of pathology are under development.
Aims

1. We will establish a voluntary PLCO Pathology Panel (including > 3 participants) to review histopathologic slides of ovarian, tubal and peritoneal carcinomas; 2. Each PLCO Pathology Panel member will provide a histopathologic type and grade for each case using standardized criteria and record results on a form developed for the study; a. Intra- and interobserver reproducibility for histopathologic type will be assessed as crude percentages and as kappa statistics; b. Grading will be performed using three systems: FIGO; Shimizu / Silverberg; and MD Anderson; c. Intra- and interobserver reproducibility for grade using each system will be assessed as crude percentages and as kappa statistics; 3. A single histopathologic type and grade result will be assigned for each case by majority based on the review described in #2; a. Type and grade will be compared with regard to main ovarian cancer risk factors; stage at presentation; CA125 levels and reports of transvaginal ultrasounds.
