Periodic Health Assessments Datasets
Beginning in 2016, a standardized periodic health assessment was mandated for service members. When using information from the PHA it is important to note that responses to the questionnaire are self-reported information. Furthermore, since collection protocol began in 2016, only 22% of service members have form responses. Because the form responses are collected from 2016 through 2024, the respondents tend to be younger than the general MACS cohort, while cancers and non-cancer conditions disproportionately affect older individuals.
For each dataset, a Data Dictionary that describes the data is publicly available. In order to obtain the actual data in SAS or CSV format, you must begin a new MACS project. Data will be delivered once the project is approved and data transfer agreements are completed. A justification must be provided in the IRB Proposal for each data category as grouped in the data dictionary, showing how it supports the aims of the request.
