Government Funding Lapse

Because of a lapse in government funding, the information on this website may not be up to date, transactions submitted via the website may not be processed, and the agency may not be able to respond to inquiries until appropriations are enacted. The NIH Clinical Center (the research hospital of NIH) is open. For more details about its operating status, please visit cc.nih.gov. Updates regarding government operating status and resumption of normal operations can be found at OPM.gov.

Personnel Datasets

Personnel data are available in two formats:

  1. Summarized demographic information across all records.
  2. Time-Series of demographic information as provided by Defense Medical Surveillance System (DMSS) synchronization

Summarized demographic information includes variables such as the highest education level attained, the total number of days served in the military, and the first known values when either enlistment was prior to 1990 or when it was missing on their first record.

For each dataset, a Data Dictionary that describes the data is publicly available. In order to obtain the actual data in SAS or CSV format, you must begin a new MACS project. Data will be delivered once the project is approved and data transfer agreements are completed. A justification must be provided in the IRB Proposal for each data category as grouped in the data dictionary, showing how it supports the aims of the request.
