Title
Chocolate consumption and mortality in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial
Summary
Chocolate is one of the most popular confectionery products all over the world, especially in Western countries. A growing body of evidence has revealed the beneficial effects of chocolate on cardiovascular health. For example, chocolate consumption has been associated with reduced risks of stroke, coronary heart disease, and heart failure (1-3). However, evidence on chocolate consumption and mortality in the general population is sparse and inconclusive. Specifically, a study of 20951 men and women observed that higher chocolate consumption was significantly associated with lower mortality from cardiovascular disease (4), whereas such a significant association was not observed in another study of 34489 postmenopausal women (5). In addition, to our knowledge, no study has examined the effects of chocolate consumption on all-cause and non-cardiovascular mortality in the general population.

Aims

(1) To examine the association of chocolate consumption with mortality;
(2) To describe the potential dose-response relationship between chocolate consumption and mortality;
(3) To identify the potential effect modifiers of the association between chocolate consumption and mortality.
